A Compeer is a Friend

by Stuart Jacoby

I heard about Compeer through their television ads. I wanted to find a compeer so that I would have a companion and a friend. I met my compeer at a meeting of the DMDA (Depressive and Manic Depressive Association) support group. We hit it off together and he suggested that he become my compeer. He means a great deal to me. I admire most of all my compeer’s integrity. My compeer is very forthright. If something is not right, he’ll let you know about it promptly. He tells it like it is. I have been with my compeer now for three years. Our schedules permit our getting together about twice a month. We enjoy going to the movies and having lunch or dinner.

The most memorable meeting that I have had with my compeer was an October Sunday afternoon at his house. We quaffed mugs of root beer and we enjoyed his homemade pizza. It was a beautiful time together.

I look up to my compeer with respect. He has encouraged me to facilitate leading our support group. My compeer has been a mentor to me. I have tried to emulate his ideals and to carry through with them. During the time my compeer and I have known each other, I have grown in self-esteem and confidence. I have found friendship and companionship. I would say to someone looking for a compeer that this program is worthwhile.
